Car Insurance Calculator

How much will car insurance cost you? This calculator gives a quick estimate from four things that move the price most: where you live, your age, your driving record and how much coverage you buy. It uses published 2026 averages, so it shows the likely range before you spend time on quotes. Only a real quote can price your exact car, ZIP code and history.

Alaska and Hawaii aren't included in the source data.

How the estimate is worked out

The calculator starts from the average full-coverage premium in your state and adjusts it with three national factors. Each factor is the ratio between a group's average premium and the national average in the same data:

  1. State: average annual full-coverage premium by state (Experian, “Car Insurance Average Costs by State,” published September 9, 2026, data for the 12 months to August 2026).
  2. Coverage: state-minimum liability is priced at the national ratio between minimum coverage ($1,580 a year) and full coverage ($2,922 a year), about 54% (Experian, 2026).
  3. Age and gender: Experian's 2026 average premiums by age band and gender, divided by its national average of $2,262. If you don't choose a gender, or you live in a state where insurers can't use it (California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina and Pennsylvania), the calculator uses the average of the two.
  4. Driving record: Experian's 2026 averages by driving record (for example $2,112 a year for a clean record and $2,515 for one violation), divided by the same national average. For a DUI, the clean-record factor is multiplied by 1.94, the average increase after a DUI across the insurers in Insure.com's 2026 SR-22 cost analysis (published May 11, 2026).

The figure is rounded to the nearest $10 and shown with a range of 20% either side, because the factors overlap in real pricing (young drivers, for instance, are also more likely to have tickets) and because the calculator can't see your car, ZIP code, mileage, credit or discounts.

What the calculator can't see

  • Your ZIP code. City premiums can be far above a state average, and rural ones well below it.
  • Your car. Repair costs, theft rates and safety ratings vary widely by model.
  • Your deductibles and limits. “Full coverage” can mean very different limits; see premiums, deductibles and limits.
  • Credit-based insurance score, where it's allowed, plus marital status, annual mileage and prior insurance history.
  • Discounts such as multi-policy, good student, safe driver and paid-in-full.
  • The insurer. The same driver can be quoted very different prices by different companies, often a bigger difference than any single factor above.
